Established in 2009, the knitwear line blends contemporary elements with traditional knitting techniques to offer unique pieces that draws heavily on the designer’s Peruvian heritage. She designs all her collections in her DC studio using the finest fibers on her own knitting machines, then she works alongside skilled Peruvian artisans who use traditional knitting techniques to hand-make each piece based on her samples.
The pop-up will feature DeNada’s newest winter collection, including scarves, gloves and hats, as well as apparel including a variety of outer-wear and knit tops. Steadfast Supply shoppers will enjoy a 10% discount on DeNada pieces during the pop-up.
ABOUT THE BRAND: DeNada is a contemporary knit apparel and accessories brand for women and men. DeNada is the vision of its founder, Virginia Arrisueño, and blends contemporary style with elements of her Peruvian heritage to offer unique, handmade pieces. Every DeNada piece is meticulously crafted and represents the core tenets of DeNada’s aesthetic: quality, style, and ease.
“As a first-generation American, I find it important to thoughtfully combine traditional elements of my Peruvian heritage with modern style to offer my customers high-quality knitwear that is not just another accessory but a work of art.”
Collaboration is a key feature of Arrisueño’s creative process. Each year, she travels to Perú to work alongside skilled artisans in creating next season’s collection. This hands-on approach comes with the added bonus of ensuring fair trade business practices so that DeNada’s customers can shop confidently knowing that each piece is produced in an ethical manner.
“These trips are invaluable experiences. I have developed strong bonds with the Peruvian artisans that I work with. They are like family to me and have helped shape me into the artist I am today.”
Arrisueño was born in Morristown, NJ in the early 80s. A daughter of Peruvian immigrants and the youngest of her four siblings, Arrisueño frequently cites her Latin upbringing and family’s entrepreneurial success in the U.S. as igniting her artistic and business pursuits. In particular, she recalls her father’s fondness for travel and the arts and her mother’s impeccable sense of style as personal inspirations.
“My parents are my ultimate role models. They instilled a hard work ethic in me from a very young age. Because of them, I am constantly reminded that with passion and hard work, I can achieve my dreams. “
Arrisueño received her BFA at the University of Maryland, where she focused almost exclusively on fiber art. Her creative talent and technical skills were duly recognized through several awards including the Sadat Art for Peace Award, delivered by Nelson Mandela, and first prize in Viridian Artists, Inc National Competition juried by the late Robert Rosenblum, curator at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Arrisueño also interned at the DC’s Hirshhorn Museum and Numark Gallery, and Vertigo Gallery in London. She put her business savvy and artistic aptitude to work and established DeNada (which commonly means “you’re welcome,” in Spanish), initially selling handbags and t-shirts. Over the years, the DeNada collection has grown to include knitwear and knit accessories such as scarves, shawls, sweaters, gloves and hats.
Arrisueño currently lives in Washington, DC with her best friend and husband, artist Kelly Towles, their son, and their dog, Kobi.
