ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Kristi Whitfield is an executive, an entrepreneur, and an urban planner with over 20 years of experience implementing change. Kristi believes deeply in the impact that place and opportunity has on the well-being of individuals and communities. Because of this, Kristi has spent her career helping move people up the economic ladder in one way or another. Since joining the D.C. Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD), she has directed her team to develop and implement programs that will have a long lasting impact on the small business community in the District. Under Kristi’s direction the agency has achieved a record $850 million in spending with Small Business Enterprises. In addition, DSLBD hosted District Connect, a small business conference attended by over 300 residents who participated in 50 matchmaking sessions. As a result of Kristi’s efforts, access to capital was improved through the infusion of $1.3 million into the small business community. She has elevated Aspire, a program for returning citizens, to be recognized as a national model for developing and training successful small business owners. As a result of her leadership, business owners and residents have benefited from job creation and an environment of increasing opportunities. Prior to working at DSLBD, she increased affordable housing for vulnerable families, designed and implemented classes for aspiring entrepreneurs and taught classes on economic literacy and micro- business startups. She administered a $65 million pool of funds dedicated to improving neighborhoods. She created training opportunities to help current employees get better paying jobs. Each of her jobs has focused in one way or another on access and/or opportunity.
Kristi joined the ranks of entrepreneurs in 2006 first as a consultant, then at the helm of a transportation & logistics company, and most recently as the co-founder of Curbside Cupcakes. Based on these experiences, Kristi is passionate about driving resources to small businesses and helping them grow. Kristi lives in Washington DC with her husband Sam and their two boys.
